Led by the Biodiversity Center's educational staff and North Texas Master Naturalist volunteers, this program combines engaging classroom training with inspiring field-based discovery to help young people develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of Texas' ecosystems. Through hands-on explorations and outdoor adventures, students will gain the knowledge and skills to become a lover of nature and responsible steward of the environment.
The Junior Master Naturalist program includes seven courses that introduce students to various aspects of the natural environment (see course schedule below). Each 4-hour course consists of a 2-hour interactive lesson followed by a 2-hour field exploration. The lesson takes place indoors at the Biodiversity Education Center, where students explore foundational concepts through engaging activities. The field exploration is conducted outdoors at the adjacent Coppell Nature Park. This combination gives students the opportunity to apply the concepts they learn, develop skills, and experience wildlife first-hand.
Once they've completed the program, graduates will have the opportunity to help train future Junior Master Naturalists by becoming volunteer mentors!
Registration for the 2020 - 2021 Jr. Master Naturalists program opens August 1st at coppellactivities.com. The cost is $175 for Coppell residents, $195 for non-residents. Space is limited to 10. Health screenings are conducted upon arrival and masks must be worn at all times until further notice.
