2019 Storybook Contest

The Cozby Library and Community Commons would like to invite young artists to participate in the Storybook Contest going on through January 31, 2019! This contest is for grades K – 12. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, January 31 at 9 p.m. and winners will be announced by Monday, February 11. Contestants must submit illustrated picture books.

First place winners will receive a bound copy of their illustrated book. A copy of the book will be added to the Library's local author collection, published on Biblioboard, and displayed on the Storybook Walk. Second place winners will receive a bound copy of their book, and a copy will be published on Biblioboard.

Guidelines for this contest are outlined below:

  • Participants must be in grades K - 12.
  • One entry per person or group. The oldest member of group determines the age division.
  • Books must be submitted by 9 p.m. on January 31, 2019.
  • Winners will be announced February 11, 2019.
  • All works must be picked up by March 1, 2019.
  • By submitting an entry, you have given Cozby Library and Community Commons permission to reproduce and publicize your work. It may be published in multiple formats with the author's and illustrator's name(s).

If you would like to submit a written piece, entries must be in picture book format that compliments the book's artwork. The pages of your book must be in proper order with numbers written lightly on the back. Entries must not have been previously published. Title page must include the title, author's name, and illustrator's name. Format, spelling, and grammar are all factors in the judging process.

If you would like to submit an illustrated piece, do not use trademarked, brand names, or licensed characters or products. Artwork can be created using paints, inks, crayons, markers, original computer graphics, original photography, cut paper, and printing processes (linoleum block, silk screen, sponge painting, potato stamping, etc.). Pencil drawings are not recommended. Works must fill most of the page. Do not use newspaper print as background.

Submission formatting guidelines:

  • All entries must contain illustrated artwork and must be received in its original format
  • Three-dimensional artwork (pop-ups, flaps, movable parts, plasticine, etc.) will not be accepted
  • Artwork may be computer generated only if it is the artist's original creation
  • Use one side of the page only
  • Text may be typed, computer generated, or handwritten
  • Both text and artwork must be the sole creation of the author/illustrator
  • Use 8 ½" x 11" paper
  • Do not staple, laminate, or bind the book
  • Your book must be 16 or 32 pages exactly. Sixteen-page books need to be designed on 8 ½" x 11" paper with a landscape orientation. Thirty-two-page books need to be designed on 11" x 8 ½" paper with a portrait orientation.

To organize your entry for submission, arrange all pages in order (with marked number on back) and place in a folder or envelope. Do not bind the pages. Provide cover art and a dedication page; these will not be counted as part of the page count. Be sure to include the completed entry form with your work and deliver to the front desk of the Library by the January 31 deadline. Email or fax submissions will not be accepted.

First and second place winners will be chosen from two age divisions: K – 5th grade and 6th – 12th grade. Winning pieces will be chosen by an independent panel of librarians and teachers.

There will also be a Storybook Workshop on Thursday, January 3 at 3 p.m. for those who would like help with their works.

The submission form can be downloaded online, or a physical copy can be picked up at the Library. Be original and have fun!
