Coppell City Council Approves Construction of Arts Center

At the June 12, 2018 meeting, the Coppell City Council voted six to one to approve the Guaranteed Maximum Price Amendment to the agreement between the City of Coppell and Core Construction, giving the City the green light to begin the construction of a new Arts Center located in Old Town Coppell.

"This journey has been quite some time in coming," said Mike Land, City Manager. "The original conversations started in 1997, and this project was included in the community-supported Coppell Vision 2030 strategic plan that was adopted in 2009. Over the last three years, we have conducted in excess of 15 meetings on this subject with the Council, and we now have a plan in place that will enhance the city's offerings and improve the quality of life for our residents."

The Arts Center will be approximately 29,000 square feet, and it will include a flexible theater, a main stage theater, a multipurpose room that expands the facility's use beyond just the arts, exhibit, classroom and office space and a courtyard plaza. Construction is estimated to be completed by November 2019.

"The Arts Center presents an opportunity to create business synergies, drawing locals and visitors alike in helping our restaurants and other businesses in Old Town Coppell to be more successful and to be more attractive to those seeking arts and entertainment alternatives," said Councilmember Marvin Franklin. "I really think the Arts Center is going to elevate the quality of life in our community."

The $16,983,81 project will be primarily funded by the Coppell Recreation and Development Corporation (CRDC), a sales tax revenue fund that was established to undertake projects for youth and adult amateur athletics, entertainment and public gathering facilities, exhibition and museum facilities, parks and recreational facilities and more. Coppell voters re-authorized the CRDC's use of sales tax revenue in the November 5, 2013 election.
