Kaleidoscope Virtual Celebration

Virtual Coppell Writers Group

Seeking inspiration and support for your writing practice? Bring your notebook and pen and join the Cozby Library and Community Commons discussions on all things writing!  They share tips and tricks from a wide variety of sources and offer optional writing prompts, timed exercises, and chances to share your writing in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Facilitated by Amanda Kennedy and Tara Henderson.

The Coppell Farmers Market is the best unique, small market in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Vendors feature grass-fed meats and poultry, organic eggs, artisan breads, honey, and other specialty products. Come out to the Farmers Market to find local healthy food, develop a relationship with those providing your food, meet up with friends and neighbors, and be a part of the local movement. Racial Equity

October 3  |   2 pm   |   Cozby Library and Community Commons

The community conversation on racism continues with this event in collaboration with the Institute for Urban Policy Research at The University of Texas at Dallas. During this presentation, topics including structural racism, institutional racism, white privilege, and racial equity will be explored. They will also look at actions that individuals can take to combat racism. There will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. Space is limited and registration is required. You only need to register one person for each household that will be viewing together.

​Teen Mental Health Series – Part 3

We all need help with coping strategies and learning the best methods to take care of ourselves. Teens and parents are invited to join the Cozby Library and Community Commons for a three-part series focused on teen mental health strategies presented by Chris Guzniczak, LPC, a Licensed Professional Counselor at Flower Mound Counseling. This year is putting us through our paces. To address current mental health needs, Chris Guzniczak will explore:  How to stay strong during a pandemic through radical acceptance, avoiding isolation, and changing your perspective, as well as staying mentally healthy and retaining a sense of self in high school and college.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hikers are asked to wear protective clothing and bring a water bottle. Registration is required for each participant and space is limited to 10. $5 fee.

Join the Cozby Library and Community Commons for an informal chat about the books, movies, television, and music we all are currently enjoying. Once chatting is finished, they'll have a creative writing and/or drawing prompt. Maybe you'll find your next favorite read or connect with others who like the same books as you! There is no required reading for this book club. Just come prepared to share a title you enjoyed and create!

​CPR-AED

October 10  |   9 am  – Noon   |   Life Safety Park

CPR AED is an instructor-led course that teaches critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency situation until emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in this course include first aid, choking relief, and what to do for sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants. There is no minimum age requirement for this class; however, all registrants need to be capable of comprehending the material and practicing in the activities. In general, this class suits ages 15+.

Registration is required and can be found by visiting LifeSafetyPark.org.


​Intro to Meditation

Meditation has many recognized benefits including reduction of stress. Whether you'd like to try out meditating or have meditated for years, join us for an introduction class. The instructor will start with a relaxation exercise and then move into guided meditation.

​Spooky Skulls & Skeletons Trail Day 

October 12 |   2 – 4 pm |  Biodiversity Education Center

Halloween is just around the corner — we can feel it in our bones. Make no bones about it, not all skeletons are alike! Discover the ins and outs of skeletons and skulls in nature.

Trail Days are designed for families and youth ages 3-14. Drop in during open hours to learn about a theme in nature by exploring various activity stations on the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Maps are provided and station locations allow social distancing. Please arrive with enough time to complete activities before the close time. This program is FREE of charge and required is not registration.


​Page Turners Book Club

This month the Cozby Library and Community Commons is discussing The Last Year of the War by Susan Meissner. Join guest instructor Natalia Rodriguez for a course in charcoal drawing. Each class will build on the one before to give you a firm foundation in this artistic technique. Please make sure that you can attend all 5 classes before registering. You will automatically be registered for the entire series.  Participants must provide their own supplies. Charcoal drawing supplies are relatively inexpensive and can be found locally or online. This class is open to adults and teens age 15 and up and will be held via Zoom, a free online presentation platform. ​Old Time Radio: Lights Out, Everybody

October 18  |   2 pm   |   Cozby Library and Community Commons

This virtual presentation uses sound clips from some of the best known mystery and horror programs from the Golden Age of radio (including Escape, Inner Sanctum and Lights Out) to illustrate how radio could truly be a "Theater of the mind" and use music, voices and sounds to create indelible — and often frightening — "pictures."  This program is suitable for all ages.

​Scare on the Square

October 24  |  11 am – 2 pm  |  Old Town Coppell

Come out in your spookiest Halloween costumes to trick-or-treat in Old Town, 768 W. Main Street, on Saturday, October 24 for Scare on the Square! From 11 am – 2 pm, participating local businesses will be handing out treats to little ghosts and ghouls! Grab some lunch from Fletchers Original Corny Dogs while you shop and trick-or-treat!


​Virtual Teen Crafternoon

Teens 6th-12th grade can join the Cozby Library and Community Commons for an instructor-led crafting session with Teresa Mungo. They'll be making a color-blocked canvas painting, which will be a stylish addition to anyone's Zoom background! Supplies for this craft are included in the October Teen Craft Bag. Bags are limited. This craft bag will be available in October (date TBD) in the library lobby and will remain available while supplies last.

​Halloween Candy Cruise

October 24 |   4 – 6 pm   |   Parking Lot at Coppell Senior and Community Center

Roll into Halloween with a sweet ride through our Candy Cruise! Join City of Coppell departments, local businesses, and organizations for this new twist on trick or treating! Remain in your vehicle and drive through the parking lot at the Coppell Senior and Community Center and receive pre-bagged treats (while supplies last). There will be an optional photo opportunity at the end where families may briefly exit their vehicles. Social distancing guidelines will be in place. All candy distributors and drivers must wear a mask.


​Virtual Lit Fix: Frankenstein

October 26  |   7 pm   |   Cozby Library and Community Commons 

The creature from Mary Shelley's famous novel bears little resemblance to the Halloween version of Frankenstein's monster.  Learn how this radical female author broke all the rules by writing one of the first science fiction novels at the age of 18.  They will also discuss her very personal struggles that emerge between the lines of this classic horror story.  You don't need to have read the text to participate, just come with a curious mind.

​Charcoal Drawing Series

Join guest instructor Natalia Rodriguez for a course in charcoal drawing. Each class will build on the one before to give you a firm foundation in this artistic technique. Please make sure that you can attend all 5 classes before registering. You will automatically be registered for the entire series. Participants must provide their own supplies. Charcoal drawing supplies are relatively inexpensive and can be found locally or online. This class is open to adults and teens age 15 and up and will be held via Zoom, a free online presentation platform. The EcoExplorer program is venturing outdoors. Activity Kits will be available for pick up at the office window during visitor hours. Kits contain instructions and materials to complete learning activities throughout the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Themes change weekly and will be posted on the BEC Facebook page.  Limit one kit per child. Take your trail experience up a notch!
