On-Street Bike Lane Installation

Pavement marking and signage depicting on-street bicycle lanes have recently been installed along Moore Road, Fairway Drive and along Riverchase Drive from Sandy Lake Road to MacArthur Boulevard. While bike lane striping and the installation of side paths is complete, additional bike lane symbols, directional arrows and pavement markers will be installed in the coming weeks. The project is expected to be complete at the end of February 2020.

Cycling is a great way to stay healthy and get around town while reducing pollution and saving on gas. With the recent installation of on-street bike lanes around town, the City of Coppell wants to remind cyclists and motorists to share the road safely.

Cyclists and motorists should take extra precautions when traveling together. All motorists are urged be aware of their surroundings, drive carefully and pay attention to cyclists. Bicyclists have the same responsibility as drivers to follow the rules of the road, obeying traffic signs, signals and lane markings.

Motorists:

  • Be courteous and “share the road” with bicyclists.
  • Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.
  • Be especially watchful for riders when making turns, either left or right.
  • It is unlawful to drive in a bike lane except when making a right turn.

Bicyclists:

  • Riders are considered vehicle operators and are required to obey the same rules of the road.
  • Be predictable and ride in control at all times. Proceed at a safe speed that permits quick reactions to unexpected circumstances.
  • Communicate your intentions to drivers and other cyclists as much as possible. Use hand signals when turning or stopping but assume that those signals might not be understood by every driver.
  • Bicyclists should increase their visibility to drivers by wearing fluorescent or brightly colored clothing, preferably with reflective tape or patches.
  • Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride. Per Coppell ordinance, all riders under the age of 14 must wear a helmet.
