Building Inspections

Our Mission

The Building Inspections division administers and enforces the building construction, fire, zoning, and neighborhood integrity codes and ordinances in an effort to ensure a safe, well maintained community.

Notices Regarding Inspections & Citizen Self Service

We strongly encourage any homeowner, contractor, or other party who comes into contact with a City of Coppell Building, Code Compliance, or Environmental Health inspector to wear a mask or face covering.

Changes to Fence Permits Effective 8/1/22

Beginning on August 1, 2022 the City will require the following for all fence permits:

  • Pier inspection (post must be in place and a string line ran from property pin to property pin). Pier must be 3’ deep from the top of the gravel at the bottom up to grade so that the metal post will be buried a minimum of 36” below grade, pier must be a minimum of three times the diameter of the post, and six inches of gravel at the bottom of the pier for drainage.
  • Fence must be 100% on the permitted property unless a letter of permission from the neighboring property owner is included with application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to know and abide by property lines.

Remote Video Inspections (RVI)

Please see our Remote Video Inspection Information (PDF) for instructions on scheduling these inspections. The city will still accept, review, and issue all classifications of building permits. All other inspections will continue to be conducted in person.

Citizen Self Service Portal (CSS)

All inspections should be scheduled through the Citizen Self Service portal. For Remote Video Inspections, please email Building Inspections, after scheduling your inspection on CSS, to set up the appointment time.

All permit applications, plans, and payments will also be completed through CSS. The portal and instructions to create an account can be found at here.

Certificate of Occupancy or Contractor Registration

Anyone wishing to apply for a Certificate of Occupancy or Contractor Registration will need to complete the forms online. Download the Contractor Registration Form (PDF) here or the Certificate of Occupancy Application (PDF) here.  Please email your completed forms and all required documents to Building Inspections.
