Professional Standards
The Professional Standards Section is responsible for a variety of functions for the Department, including:
o Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance
o Fleet operations
o Grants
o Internal affairs
o Operation of the SafeLight Coppell program
o Property and evidence room management
o Public information and media relations
o Quartermaster
The section is responsible for maintaining our status as a "recognized agency" by the Texas Police Chief's Association Texas Law Enforcement Recognition Program. The purpose of this program is to demonstrate utilization and compliance with the "best practices" in law enforcement in Texas.
Training
The Training Section is responsible for:
o Coordination of our Citizens on Patrol volunteers
o Crime prevention
o Field training of new officers
o Hiring
o Recruiting
o Social media utilization
o Training
The section facilitates the Department's National Night Out program, which has been recognized as one of the best programs in the nation on numerous occasions. Section personnel also coordinate other citizen engagement programs such as women's self-defense, citizen's police academy, and Coffee With Cops.
North Texas Emergency Communications Center
Support Services Bureau is also the department's liaison with the North Texas Emergency Communications Center (NTECC). NTECC is the public safety answering point for the City of Coppell and is responsible for maintaining communications with the police, fire, paramedic, and emergency management functions of the city of Coppell. NTECC is staffed and in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. NTECC staff members answer calls for service from citizens, businesses, and other law enforcement agencies, ultimately sending the appropriate public safety resources to respond to routine and emergency calls for assistance.
The Investigations Division is comprised of eight sworn personnel and one civilian. Criminal Investigations personnel also handle the registration of convicted sex offenders, and provide coordination for the local Crime Stoppers program.

Responsibilities
The Criminal Investigations Division has the responsibility of investigating all criminal acts committed within the City Of Coppell. Each Detective receives training and has experience which makes them capable of investigating any type of crime. Detectives investigate and follow up on leads, develop suspects, execute search and arrest warrants, and file appropriate charges with District Attorney for prosecution.
Detective Duties
Although each detective is trained in many disciplines, the Detective Unit is divided into specialized sections where detectives have been provided additional training specific to certain types of criminal activity including crimes against persons, domestic violence, financial crimes, and property crimes.
Typical duties for Police Detectives include:
- Contacting and interviewing Complainants on assigned cases
- Determining the identity of criminal suspects
- Preparing probable cause affidavits for arrest and search warrants
- Executing arrest and search warrants for Coppell offenders when possible
- Preparing case reports for the District Attorney's office
- Testifying before Grand Jury's and Criminal Courts of Law
- Locating and returning Complainant property
- Assisting other law enforcement agencies when required
- Assisting crime victims with understanding the judicial process
In addition to Unit Detectives, a crime analyst provides investigative support through statistical analysis and criminal intelligence gathering and dissemination.
The Animal Services Section is responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the citizens of Coppell and their pets. The personnel of the section are responsible for the operation of the city's Animal Shelter where pets can be adopted, stray pets are kept, and animals can be held in quarantine if required. The Animal Services staff also takes a proactive approach to patrol the city to address violations of the city's ordinance concerning safe and responsible pet ownership, taking enforcement action as is necessary.
