Weather awareness is key for winter preparedness. The City of Coppell's Emergency Management Department recommends all residents utilize three different methods of emergency notification, such as text or email alerts from NotifyCoppell, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio, and a smartphone application.
Sign up for emergency notifications through NotifyCoppell. You will need to provide your name, email and phone number. You can sign up to receive notifications about a variety of weather advisories, watches and warnings.
Ensure that your phone is charged and you have access to back-up chargers and batteries so you can stay informed in the event of a power outage.
Please visit the Emergency Management page for more information about preparedness.

Take Preventative Measures!
- Prevent pipes from freezing by insulating exposed pipes, allowing the faucet to drip slightly and leaving cabinet doors open
- Disconnect and drain your outdoor hoses
- Locate your water meter and make sure you know how to open the lid and turn your water off in case of a leak or other emergency
- Shut down irrigation system and drain outside faucets
Monitor Your Water Usage to Check for Leaks!
Sign up for the MyH2O Customer Portal and Get to Know Your H2O! The portal provides you with access to water usage data from your meter, and you can set a leak alert to notify you if the system detects a leak at your home or business. Plus, you can set up usage alerts so you receive an email when you reach the usage limit you specify.
Note, the system updates every four hours, so while it will not immediately alert you to every leak, it might help you determine if your irrigation or pool has a leak.
Pipe Bursts
As the weather warms above freezing, any pipes that were frozen may begin to burst. In the event of a broken water pipe, it’s important to shut off your water as soon as possible. Don’t know how to unlock your meter lid to turn off your water? Check out the quick, instructional video. If you need assistance turning off your water or have another water/sewer emergency, please call 972-462-5150.
Repairing Broken Pipes
After prolonged freezing temperatures, residents who experienced frozen pipes may be in need of repairs. Permits and inspections are important to ensure that the repairs are done correctly and performed by a qualified, licensed plumber. The law requires it to help keep you protected! Please submit your permit application on the Coppell Self Service Portal.
Even if you have a freeze protector among your pool equipment, you should inspect the pump daily to make sure it's moving water through your pipes. Your pool’s pipes, too, can burst if they freeze.
If you do experience frozen pipes in your pool, shut your water off, turn off power to the pump, and drain the pool pump.
You may also want to consider draining your equipment in the offseason to prevent busted pipes in the winter months.
Reporting Power Outages
If you experience a power outage due to fallen branches or for another reason, report the outage to Oncor, the Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (or TDSP) for Coppell. Oncor maintains the poles and wires, handles service outages, and reads your meter.

Prepare for Possible Power Outages
Prepare for power outages by bundling up, making sure you have flashlights, batteries, and an indoor heat source, if possible!
Generators, grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices should never be used inside a home, basement, garage, or camper – or even outside near an open window. Read more about carbon monoxide safety.
- Have flashlights easily accessible with extra batteries.
- Prepare a generator, if possible. Never use a generator indoors.
- Have lots of warm blankets and jackets on hand for when it starts to get cold.
- Ensure your home is adequately warmed and charge all electronic devices ahead of time.
- Close your curtains and blinds to trap in heat.
- Have a heat source: prep a fireplace or standalone indoor heater to use, if possible. Never use grills, camp stoves, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices to heat your home.
In a winter weather event, the City of Coppell performs de-icing procedures on major roadways within the City limits as well as the parking lots of essential public facilities. Residential streets, sidewalks, and driveways are not usually treated.
As always, Coppell's first responders, including Police, Fire and Public Works, are prepared to respond in an emergency,
