With yarn in their hands and love in their hearts, the Knit Wits have used their talent for fiber arts to donate to local organizations since 2014. It all started with a loom knitting class hosted by one of the Knit Wits founding members. Demand for this class and new projects grew over time to include loom knitting, knitting, and crochet, thus establishing the Knit Wits group!
The Knit Wits donate to those in need regardless of age, from the newest newborn to an adult in need of a warm hat to wear. Knit Wits are a contributing group for the Love Thy Baby organization which donates items to families in need at Parkland Hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital, PediPlace, and other area hospitals and organizations. Members agree that the most rewarding part of their work is knowing that these items will benefit families in need and will serve as a caring gesture for the recipients.
COVID-19 posed a unique challenge and opportunity to the group when the Senior Center was closed for part of 2020. Members gathered materials and continued their work from their homes and garages, supplying each other with the fabrics and yarn needed to continue to provide donations. Despite being socially distanced from one another, the Knit Wits remained dedicated to their mission to craft for those in need by donating over 14,000 items in 2020, including 5,000 masks donated to local hospital staff.
Throughout it all, the camaraderie and friendships that Knit Wits members have formed over the years have held strong. Their servants’ hearts have crafted 67,080 items since April 2014 and are going strong.
