Summer Reading Challenge

Through July 31  |   Library and Community Commons

It’s easy to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge! Pick up a reading log at the library. Each day you read (or are read to) for 20 minutes, color in a box on the reading log. Fill out the entry slips and return them to the library to win a FREE book and to be entered into the grand prize drawing. The first day to log your reading is Saturday, May 21. The last day to log your reading is Sunday, July 31.


Splish Splash Storytime

July 1  |   9 am   |   The CORE 

A special storytime at the pool! The CORE and the Cozby Library are partnering again this summer to offer Splish Splash Storytime, in conjunction with Tot Swim. Meet at the pool for stories, songs, splashing, and fun! Storytime is free and will take place in the outdoor pool. Those who wish to stay and swim can do so until 10:45 am. If you would like to stay and swim after 10:45 am, you will need to have a CORE membership, punch pass, or pay the regular day pass rate. For parents and children up to age 8. The CORE is located at 234 E. Parkway Blvd.

The Coppell Farmers Market is the best unique, small market in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Vendors feature grass-fed meats and poultry, organic eggs, artisan breads, honey, and other specialty products. Come out to the Farmers Market to find local healthy food, develop a relationship with those providing your food, meet up with friends and neighbors, and be a part of the local movement. The market is open 8 am - noon every Saturday. Check out Coppell Farmers Market online for more information.

Saturday Make & Take Crafts

July 2  |  9 am – Noon   |  Coppell Arts Center

How about a fun, creative start to your weekend? Bring your family to the Coppell Arts Center one Saturday each month for free make-and-take craft workshops. Kids will receive a do-it-yourself craft kit that they can assemble and customize at art stations inside the Coppell Arts Center. Stop by anytime between 9 am – noon to create your craft. A parent must accompany all children at all times. 

 

Coppell Historical Society – Open House

July 2  |   10 am – Noon   |   Kirkland House

Kirkland House and the Minyard Store at Coppell Heritage Park are open to the public on Saturdays of most months from 10 am - noon. The Old Minyard Store will have old-fashioned candy and postcards of historic Coppell for sale.

 

Celebrate Coppell: Party in the Park

July 2  |  6 – 10 pm   |  Andrew Brown Park East

Celebrate Independence Day with live music by Emerald City Band and Prophets and Outlaws, lawn games, and delicious food truck fare. The fireworks spectacular, choreographed to patriotic music, begins at approximately 9:45 pm. Additional details are available on the Celebrate Coppell page. 

 

Celebrate Coppell: Parade Down Parkway

July 4  |  9 am   |  Samuel and Parkway Blvds.

The City of Coppell’s annual Independence Day parade begins at Samuel Blvd. and Sandy Lake Rd., travels north on Samuel to Parkway Blvd., then heads west to Town Center. Intersections along the parade route will be closed prior to the approaching parade and remain closed until all entries have passed. Line the parade route early for the best spot to see the red, white, and blue floats go by!

Explore the differences between animals with backbones and those without. Compare body sizes, structures, and other adaptations. Discover skulls, shells, exoskeletons, molts, decomposers, and bioindicators. Meet some of the vertebrates and invertebrates that live in Coppell Nature Park along the way! This program is designed for families and youth ages 3-14. Drop in during open hours to explore interactive learning stations inside the Biodiversity Education Center or on the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Please arrive with enough time to complete activities before the close time. This program is FREE of charge and registration is not required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Outdoor Adventure Series – Become a Botanist

July 8  |   9 am – Noon  |  Biodiversity Education Center

Become a botanist! Consider what makes plants different from animals. Discover the unique adaptations of plants and their important, yet sometimes overlooked roles in the ecosystem. Learn how to identify some of the species you encounter in Coppell Nature Park throughout different seasons of the year. Participants are asked to wear appropriate outdoor clothing including close-toed shoes that can get wet and bring a water bottle. Class size is limited to 15. Registration is required. For ages 9 – 12.

FCNP Texas Prairie Plants

Join Rich Jaynes, for an interactive lesson on the Blackland Prairie and the vast diversity of the native grasses. This class will include a hike down to the prairie remnant within Coppell Nature Park to identify the native prairie plants. This program is hosted by the Friends of Coppell Nature Park FREE of charge. Registration is required.

Theatre Coppell Presents: Little Shop of Horrors

In this deviously delicious smash hit musical, the meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant – a singing carnivore that promises unending fame and fortune as long as Seymour keeps feeding it BLOOD! Recently revived on Broadway, the show previously ran off-Broadway for 30 years. This tongue-in-cheek comedy brings an arrangement of laughter, tears, and toe-tapping tunes. Success with Cactus and Succulents

Cactus and other succulents are increasingly popular, but they have special growing requirements. Learn how to have success with them by satisfying five important growing conditions: water, light, fertilizer, air circulation, and soil. Gina Woods, Certified Dallas County Master Gardener, will bring examples that illustrate the wide variety of succulents. For adults 18 and older.

 

Nature’s Workshop – Insects

Did you know...95% of all animal species on Earth are insects. Insects are unusual, amazing, strange, cool, weird and unique. One of the more intriguing insects is the firefly! Come learn about insects and create a glowing firefly! Expand your passion for learning about nature by creating a craft. Join us at the BEC as we enjoy a mini educational lesson and create a craft together that you can take home Children must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and registration is required. For ages 5 - 10.

 

Historic Skills and Crafts Camp

July 25 - 29  |  9 am - Noon   |  Coppell Heritage Park, 708 S. Coppell Rd.

This summer camp is designed to connect youth ages 6 - 12 with Coppell's history and acquaint them with a variety of skills practiced today and in earlier times. Each class includes hands-on activities and a lesson about the craft. A certificate will be available for students that complete all five days of the camp. Classes will be conducted by local artist Kate Shema of Createria Studios, as well as Coppell Historical Society staff and volunteers. The cost of the camp is $50 per day or $250 for the week. Please register online

Baby and Me Storytime

Babies from birth to crawling will enjoy songs, action rhymes, and share books together in this one-on-one lap sit program. Space is limited, so plan to arrive early. Tickets are available at the front desk, 30 minutes before the start of the storytime.

 

Teen Workshop: All of Your Beeswax

Join the Cozby Library for an engaging and hands-on activities from Kim Lehman, bee extraordinaire. Learn about bees and experience the many uses of beeswax. Activities include making lip balm, rolled candles, encaustic painting, honey tasting, microscopes, and products of the beehive. Great for teens interested in STEM or art activities.   

 

Craft Casual: No Sew Pillows

Join a library staff member and learn how to make a cute pillow using only fleece fabric, scissors, and stuffing.  No sewing machine required!  All materials will be provided.  This program is open to adults age 18 and up.  Registration is required.

Dallas Zoo

Join the Cozby Library for a special performance by the Dallas Zoo! Only children going into grades K-5 will be admitted. Parents and younger siblings are invited to wait in the Commons area or play in the Toddler Zone.

 

Wild By Nature – Keep CNP Beautiful

Discover the many ways YOU can help keep Coppell Nature Park beautiful! Learn which materials can be reduced, recused, or recycled. Take a tour of the Biodiversity Education Center’s sustainable design features and build a solar-powered car. Learn how YOU can contribute to scientific research by recording your observations of wildlife while minimizing your impact on nature. This program is designed for families and youth ages 3-14. Drop in during open hours to explore interactive learning stations inside the Biodiversity Education Center or on the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Please arrive with enough time to complete activities before the close time. This program is FREE of charge and registration is not required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

 

Preschool Storytime

This storytime is designed for 3-to 5-year-olds. This fun and interactive program combines activities such as read-aloud stories, songs, rhymes, and fingerplays. It introduces children to listening skills, the library, and the joy of reading. Space is limited, so plan to arrive early. All Ages Storytime

Coppell Writer’s Group

Seeking inspiration and support for your writing practice? Bring your notebook and pen and join their discussions on all things writing! The Cozby Library share tips and tricks from a wide variety of sources and offer optional writing prompts, timed exercises, and chances to share your writing in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Facilitated by Amanda Kennedy. For adults 18 and older.

 

Outdoor Adventure Series – Herp Hunting

July 29  |   9 am – Noon  |  Biodiversity Education Center
 Become a herpetologist! Discover the unique characteristics of amphibians and reptiles, their similarities and differences. Encounter some of the frogs, snakes, lizards and turtles that live in Coppell Nature Park. Participants are asked to wear appropriate outdoor clothing including close-toed shoes that can get wet and bring a water bottle. Class size is limited to 15. Registration is required. For ages 9 – 12. 

 

Splish Splash Storytime

July 29  |   9 am   |   The CORE

A special storytime at the pool! The CORE and the Cozby Library are partnering again this summer to offer Splish Splash Storytime, in conjunction with Tot Swim. Meet at the pool for stories, songs, splashing, and fun! Storytime is free and will take place in the outdoor pool. Those who wish to stay and swim can do so until 10:45 am. If you would like to stay and swim after 10:45 am, you will need to have a CORE membership, punch pass, or pay the regular day pass rate. For parents and children up to age 8. The CORE is located at 234 E. Parkway Blvd.

 

Theatre Coppell – Little Shop of Horrors

July 29 – 31  |  Friday and Saturday 8 pm & Sunday 2:30 pm  |  Coppell Arts Center

In this deviously delicious smash hit musical, the meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant – a singing carnivore that promises unending fame and fortune as long as Seymour keeps feeding it BLOOD! Recently revived on Broadway, the show previously ran off-Broadway for 30 years. This tongue-in-cheek comedy brings an arrangement of laughter, tears, and toe-tapping tunes. Coppell Farmers Market

The Coppell Farmers Market is the best unique, small market in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Vendors feature grass-fed meats and poultry, organic eggs, artisan breads, honey, and other specialty products. Come out to the Farmers Market to find local healthy food, develop a relationship with those providing your food, meet up with friends and neighbors, and be a part of the local movement. Coppell Historical Society – Open House

Kirkland House and the Minyard Store at Coppell Heritage Park are open to the public on Saturdays of most months from 10 am - noon. The Old Minyard Store will have old-fashioned candy and postcards of historic Coppell for sale.

 

End of Summer Reading Challenge

Congratulations on reading all summer! Let’s celebrate! You’re invited into the library for games, crafts, face painting, and more. Then pick up your burger from the In-N-Out truck for a picnic! In-N-Out will be available while supplies last. Free tickets for In-N-Out will be handed out during the program in the library. For all ages.
