1. How do I update my sprinkler settings?

The video tutorials below walk through the steps required to update many common automatic irrigation controllers. Please contact your irrigation system manufacturer for specific instructions for your system.

2. When can I water my lawn?

Under Stage 2: Water Watch, utility customers must limit their irrigation to the following days: 

• Water customers, including residential and business customers, with even numbered street addresses (street addresses ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) must conduct all watering on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
• Water customers, including residential and business customers, with odd numbered street addresses (street addresses ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) must conduct all watering on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday.
• Schools must conduct all watering of school sites, school facilities, and other areas maintained by the schools on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. 
• Homeowner associations (HOAs) and commercial property owner associations (POAs) must conduct all watering of common property on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
• Nursery (garden and landscape) businesses are not restricted when watering business inventory; however, they must comply with watering requirements for any landscaping associated with their facilities.

No outside watering will be allowed between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm, with the exception of hand watering, the use of non-spray irrigation systems, and the use of soaker hoses, which will be allowed all days, at all times during Stage 2.

3. How many times a week can I water my lawn?

Under Stage 2: Water Watch, utility customers must limit their irrigation to three times a week, irrigating on the three days identified in the schedule below:  

• Water customers, including residential and business customers, with even numbered street addresses (street addresses ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8) must conduct all watering on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
• Water customers, including residential and business customers, with odd numbered street addresses (street addresses ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) must conduct all watering on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday.
• Schools must conduct all watering of school sites, school facilities, and other areas maintained by the schools on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

4. Can I use a soaker hose?

Utility customers may use a soaker hose on any day, at any time during Stage 2 water restrictions. 

5. Can I hand water?

Utility customers may hand water on any day, at any time during Stage 2 water restrictions. 

6. Do I need to limit my domestic water use (bathing, flushing toilets, washing laundry or dishes, etc.)?

It is not necessary to limit domestic water use during Stage 2 water restrictions. Utility customers may continue to use water as normal for household purposes. Residents and businesses are encouraged to be water conscious and use water for everyday use wisely. 7. What triggered Stage 2 Watering Restrictions?

The City of Coppell purchases treated water from Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) at a contractual supply of 18.5 million gallons of water per day. Contractually, we have the ability to purchase additional treated water from DWU at a cost to our customers. In late July/early August 2023, water use in Coppell reached maximum volume over many consecutive days, and the City was not able to completely refill its water tanks. Per the Drought Contingency Plan, and to manage the amount of water we purchase from DWU, this kind of system demand triggers mandatory watering restrictions to ensure that the City can continue to provide water to the community at a high level of service and at as low a cost as possible.

The City of Coppell is not experiencing a water emergency; instead, we are encouraging customers to do their part to conserve water while we are under drought conditions to ensure that we can offer high-quality service and avoid a cost increase in the future.

9. How do I report a malfunctioning sprinkler head or watering violations?

If you have seen a malfunctioning sprinkler head or watering violations, please submit the form to report water waste. City staff will investigate and take corrective action.

10. How can I monitor my water use?

Utility customers in Coppell are given the tools and data needed to control their water usage and, therefore, the amount of the water portion of their bill. Customers are encouraged to sign up for the MyH2O portal to more closely monitor their water consumption and adjust their usage accordingly. Through the portal, customers can monitor water usage, set water budget and water consumption threshold alerts, view comparative data, set leak alerts, and opt-in to notifications. 

Consumption data is updated multiple times throughout the day on an internet-based customer dashboard that can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or smart phone.

11. How can I reduce the amount of water I need for irrigation in the future?

Residents and businesses alike are encouraged to be water conscious now and into the future. Visit waterisawesome.com and the City’s Watering Techniques page for tips to reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation. 

Residents and businesses are also encouraged to consider Texas SmartScape plants in their landscape. 12. If we go over our contracted 18.5 million gallons/day, will Dallas Water Utilities shut off our water supply?

No, Dallas Water Utilities (DWU), the City of Coppell’s water supplier, will not shut off the water supply if demand exceeds our contractual supply of 18.5 million gallons per day. Contractually, we have the ability to purchase additional treated water from DWU at a cost to our customers. If water consumption is not reduced, the City would be required to negotiate an increase in the amount we are allowed to purchase per day, resulting in an increase in the cost of treated water. Because the purchase of water from DWU is funded through customer water bill payments, this increase will result in higher rates for customers. Further, if we increase the amount of purchased water, we will be committed to paying for the right to take that increased volume in future years.

13. What happens if our water demand goes over 18.5 million gallons/day?

15. How do I request a watering variance?

If you have a circumstance that prevents you from complying with Stage 2 Watering Restrictions, or you believe compliance would cause harm or damage to you or your property, you may request a water variance. 

Based on the water situation at the time of request, permits may be granted for new lawns or landscaping, vacations, or other situations.

16. How is the City making sure residents and businesses are aware of the restrictions?

The City is utilizing all of its communications platforms to notify residents and businesses, and we are working directly with the school district and our high-use commercial customers.

17. The watering days listed in the ordinance are different from the watering days on the website. Which should I follow?

The City of Coppell updated the Drought Contingency and Water Conservation Plan last year, and this is the first time we have implemented it. On Thursday, August 7, 2023, after we made the announcement that we were moving to Stage 2 restrictions, we received numerous calls and messages from residents letting us know that the ordinance was more than a little confusing. As a result, we have updated the identified watering days to those listed on the website. City staff will be working with City Council in the future to update the ordinance to reflect the schedule we currently have in place. For now, please follow the days listed below and on our website, not those listed in the ordinance.
